A Computational Theory of Belief Introspection
نویسنده
چکیده
Introspection is a general term covering the ability of an agent to reflect upon the workings of his own cognitive functions. In this paper we wi l l be concerned wi th developing an explanatory theory of a particular type of introspection: a robot agent's knowledge of his own beliefs. The development is both descriptive, in the sense of being able to capture introspective behavior as it exist; and prescriptive, in yielding an effective means of adding introspective reasoning abilities to robot agents.

Tractable Meta-Reasoning in Propositional Logics of Belief
Finding adequate semantic models of deductive reasoning is a difficult problem, if deductions are to be performed efficiently and in a semantically appropriate way. The model of reasoning provided by possible-worlds semantics has been found deficient both for computational and intuitive reasons. Existing semantic approaches that were proposed as alternatives to possible-worlds semantics either ...
متن کاملIterated Belief Change in the Situation Calculus
The ability to reason about action and change has long been considered a necessary component for any intelligent system. Many proposals have been offered in the past to deal with this problem. In this paper, we offer a new approach to belief change associated with performing actions that addresses some of the shortcomings of these approaches. In particular, our approach is based on a well-devel...
متن کاملBelief Change with Noisy Sensing and Introspection
We model belief change due to noisy sensing, and belief introspection in the framework of the situation calculus. We give some properties of our axiomatization and show that it does not suffer from the problems with combining sensing, introspection, and plausibility update described in Shapiro et al. [2000].
متن کاملForthcoming in Philosophy and Phenomenological Research Introspection: Divided and Partly Eliminated
This paper will argue that there is no such thing as introspective access to judgments and decisions. It won’t challenge the existence of introspective access to perceptual and imagistic states, nor to emotional feelings and bodily sensations. On the contrary, the model presented in Section 2 presumes such access. Hence introspection is here divided into two categories: introspection of proposi...
متن کاملReasoning with Minimal Belief and Negation as Failure: Algorithms and Complexity
We study the computational properties of the propositional fragment of MBNF , the logic of minimal belief and negation as failure introduced by Lifschitz, which can be considered as a unifying framework for several nonmonotonic formalisms, including default logic, autoepistemic logic, circumscription, epistemic queries and logic programming. We characterize the complexity and provide algorithms...
